International Fight Turns Around so FBI Can Arrest Mom in Parental Kidnapping Case

By Steve Neavling

The FBI was able to get a United Airlines flight to turn around mid-flight from Washington Dulles International Airport to Beijing to arrest a passenger accused of parental kidnapping, the Washington Post reports.

The mother, Wenking Liu, was arrested Thursday evening at Dulles International Airport, where the plan returned.

Liu was charged with unlawfully attempting to remover her son from the U.S. with intent to obstruct the lawful exercise of parental rights.

The boy’s father reported the kidnapping, prompting agents to urge the airline to turn the flight around.

Column: Qatar Should Pay For Goofy Antics of Its Diplomat Aboard United Flight

WASHINGTON — It’s really not enough that the goofy Qatari diplomat who caused a scare aboard a United Flight from D.C. to Denver Wednesday will voluntarily leave the country.

The country of Qatar, at minimum, should pay for the two F-16 fighter jets that were scrambled in response to the man’s stupidity and the cost of investigators who had to deal this nonsense.

Apparently, the diplomat Mohammed al-Madadi, who has immunity from prosecution,  was going to visit a jailed al Qaeda agent in prison in Denver, and while on board the United flight, decided to light up a cigarette in the bathroom. When confronted, he apparently made a joke about trying to light his shoe on fire.

Now, if the guy had been in 5th grade, perhaps the response might have been understandable. One thing is for sure: Qatar needs to raise the bar a little and send diplomats to the U.S. who exhibit the maturity of someone beyond elementary school.

Calif. Man Who Pointed Lasers at Pilots Gets 2 1/2 Years

By Allan Lengel

Note to Dana Christian Welch: Next time play a Nintendo game instead.

Welch, 38, of Orange County, Calif., was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to 2 1/2 years in prison  for aiming a handheld laser at two Boeing commercial jets preparing to land at John Wayne Airport in Los Angles on the night of May 21, 2008, authorities said.

The U.S. Attorneys Office said he was first person in the nation to be convicted at trial for interfering with aircraft pilots. The rest pleaded guilty.

The first incident involved a United Airlines jet carrying more than 180 people. Welch pointed a green laser beam in the cockpit, causing the pilot to experience “flash blindness.”

In the second incident, which involved an Alaska Airlines plane carrying more than 80 people, Welch shined the laser into the cockpit, “causing one pilot to duck under a glare shield extending from the dashboard in the cockpit and the other pilot to delay a critical turn necessary to land the plane,” a press release said.
