More immigrants are successfully beating deportation before a judge, according to new data, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

In fact, the success rate in court is higher than it has been for more than 20 years, according to the Transaction Records Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, which collects and studies federal prosecution records.

Since October, immigration judges rejected about half of the 42,816 deportation cases heard.

Ice defended its actions.

“ICE’s enforcement strategies and policies are designed to prioritize its resources on public safety, national security and border security threats,” said ICE spokeswoman Gillian Christensen. “ICE continues to focus on sensible, effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes the removal of criminal aliens and those apprehended at the border while attempting to unlawfully enter the United States.”

An effort is afoot to make Syracuse University the first college with a curriculum based around emergency management and homeland security.

One of the leaders of the effort is Sen. John DeFrancisco, R-Syracuse, who said he has been quietly nudging Gov. Andrew Cuomo and SU to embrace the idea, Syracuse.com reports.

“It was our proposal from the Senate that ignited this mention in the State of the State,” DeFrancisco said after a speech in Albany.

He cautioned that a campus in Syracuse is still far off.

“The governor’s got to be convinced,” DeFrancisco said.” And I hope he will be.”

The feds are taking the lead in the high-profile probe into child sex allegations involving Syracuse University associate men’s basketball coach Bernie Fine, who was fired Sunday, the Post Standard reported.

The paper reported that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Syracuse and the U.S. Secret Service are taking the lead in the case against the 65-year-old coach.

The paper attributed the information to Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, who is involved in the probe as well.

“I’ve been in close contact with the U.S. Attorney,” Fitzpatrick said, according to the Post Stardard. “All of last week, we discussed the case. The lead agency in investigating is the Secret Service under the direction of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, assisted by the Syracuse Police Department.”

“We’re acting in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. I’m not doing anything without checking with them,” he added.

Investigators are looking into allegations that Fine sexually abused several boys.
