Wide-Ranging FIFA Corruption Probe Nets More Than a Dozen New Arrests

More than a dozen people are expected to be charged following the pre-dawn arrests Thursday in Switzerland in the wide-ranging corruption probe of FIFA, soccer’s multibillion-dollar governing body, the New York Times reports.

The investigation involves current and former senior soccer officials who are accused of money laundering, fraud and racketeering.

Thursday’s raid follows a series of similar arrests in May.

The arrests heavily involved South and Central American soccer leaders.

The investigation is being led by the U.S.

Mexican Drug Lord Who Killed DEA Agent Accused of Stashing Billions of Dollars in Secret Overseas Accounts

Mexican drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who ordered the kidnapping, torture and killing of DEA agent Enrique Camarena in 1985, has stashed billion of dollars in secret overseas accounts, an ex-DEA agent claims.

“Caro Quintero had billions of dollars stashed in secret bank accounts in Luxembourg and in Switzerland,” former DEA agent Hector Berrellez told Forbes in a telephone interview. “The one in Luxembourg had $4 billion and the other one had even more.”

While investigating Quintero, Barrellez said he saw the electronic statements and does not believe the government confiscated the money.

The DEA declined to comment.

Quintero was released early from prison after serving 28 years in jail.



The Inventor of “Nagra,” A Recording System Used by Fed Agents, Has Died

Federal agents remember the “Nagra,”, the first portable professional sound recorder.

Well, the inventor of the system, Stefan Kudelski, has died at age 84, according to, the website for the Swiss Broadcasting company.  The Kudelski Group in Switzerland made the announcement.

One former federal official told that it was a portable tape recorder that agents taped to their body.

“It had a specific tape length so the agents had to conclude their dealings within that set time,” he said.

The Swiss news organization reported that Kudelski created the Nagra in 1951. It was also used by the radio, film and television industry.

Swiss Won’t Extradite Roman Polanski to U.S. To Face Sentencing

The long protracted legal battle for famous film director Roman Polanski appears to be  over– at least as far as the Swiss are concerned.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Swiss authorities said Polanski, 76, will not be extradited to the United States to face sentencing in a 30-year-old incident involving sex with a 13-year-old girl. And he has been set free from house arrest.

The paper reported that the Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police said a flaw in the extradition request could not be ruled out.
