When Ariel Castro hanged himself in his jail cell earlier this week, he left behind many questions.

How was he able to avoid arrest for abducting and raping women? Why did he do it?

Some of the answers can be found in recently obtained FBI video of the convicted kidnapper, who said authorities had chances to catch him much earlier than they did, Today reports.

Castro also said his girlfriend had suspicions.

“She seen that I had a TV on in the upstairs room,’’ Castro said in the interrogation video. “And she says, ‘What is that? You have a TV on up there?’ And my heart started beating, and I was like, ‘Okay, she’s probably catching onto something.’”

Israel Keyes took the easy way out.

After the serial killer accused of murdering at least 11 people committed suicide in his Anchorage jail cell in early December, the FBI compiled a list of Keyes’ likely victims, Reuters reports.

Keyes was waiting trial for the murder of an Anchorage barista.

The FBI on Monday released more information about Keyes’ suspected murders, which investigators said began in 2001 and lasted until 2012.

“Right now, the best hope for solving these cases is going to come from information from the public,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Feldis, who led the prosecution of Keyes, told Reuters.

Inside a Serial Killer’s Mind: FBI Releases Blood-Soaked Prose of Admitted Alaskan Serial Killer

The FBI released blood-soaked, handwritten prose found beneath the body of an admitted serial killer in Alaska.

While the writings don’t shed more light on his crimes, they open a window into the mind of an obsessed murderer, CNN reports.

Israel Keyes, who killed himself in jail in December, said he killed at least eight people.

Some of the writings appear to allude to taking a life.

“Your wet lips were a promise of a secret unspoke,” Keyes wrote. “Nervous laugh it burst like a pulse of blood from your throat. There will be no more laughter here.”

Secret Service Agent on President’s Detail Apparently Committed Suicide

By Jonathan Allen
Politico

WASHINGTON –– A member of the president’s Secret Service protective detail, who was being investigated for having an unreported romantic relationship with a foreign national, was found dead Saturday in an apparent suicide, according to law enforcement sources.

The official cause of Rafael Prieto’s death is still pending.

The investigation had led to the suspension of his access to Secret Service facilities, according to sources familiar with the case.

The Secret Service does not believe that Prieto passed any sensitive or classified information to the Mexican woman, according to a senior law enforcement official. Instead, Prieto was in the midst of an “administrative process” related to his ongoing relationship, the source said.

Canadian Border Guard Recovers After Being Shot in Neck by Seattle Tattoo Artist

An unarmed Canadian border guard shot in the neck while monitoring the crossing north of Seattle is expected to fully recover, the Associated Press reports.

In the meantime, investigators are trying to determine why Andrew Michael Crews, a 32-year-old tattoo artist from Seattle, shot the guard and then committed suicide by turning the gun on himself, the AP reported.

His stepfather told the AP that Crews texted his mom that he loved her and was sorry a few hours before the shooting.

Investigators are baffled.

“The current evidence clearly indicates that prior to taking his own life, Mr. Crews deliberately fired at the victim,” said Superintendent Kevin Hackett of the British Columbia homicide investigative team handling the probe. “There is no evidence, however, to suggest the victim was specifically targeted.”

ATF Agent Who Took Own Life Battled with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

A little more than a month on the job, ATF agent Jeff Ryan was helping arrest a man with a history of impersonating police officers when all hell broke loose on Aug. 31, 2001, the Syracuse Post-Standard wrote in a report about the incident.

Crouched behind a car, Ryan watched L.A. Deputy Hagop Kuredjian get fatally shot in the head by the suspect, James Allen Beck, who had stockpiled weapons.

Ten years later, Ryan died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest.

Turns out, Ryan had been dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder from the incident and was handling complicated emotional problems since the shooting, according to a lengthy report by the Post-Standard.

The paper wrote:

Ryan, 39, suffered severe post traumatic stress disorder from that day. He spent years studying every detail of the shooting and its aftermath. He relentlessly questioned ATF on its handling of the episode, and he suspected retaliation for his persistence.

He felt paranoid. He feared ATF was tracking his every move, from his honeymoon in Fiji to a Syracuse football game.

On Sept. 19, 2011, it all became too much.

That morning he kissed his toddler son and daughter goodbye at their home in Sennett and drove to his mother’s farmland on Onondaga Hill. He texted his wife that he loved her, wrote notes to his family and drove his pickup truck to a favorite spot on the 145-acre property.

He parked his truck so it wouldn’t be visible from the road, laid a bed of hay and shot himself in the chest.

The Sikh Temple gunman who killed six people in a rampage outside Milwaukee died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, the Associated Press reports.

Wade Michael Page was wounded by police when he turned the gun on himself, the FBI said Wednesday.

Investigators still don’t know what motivated Wade Michael Page to open fire with a 9 mm pistol shortly before Sunday services.

“We have not identified anyone else responsible for the shooting and we have not identified a motive,” Teresa Carlson, FBI special agent in charge in Milwaukee, told the AP and other news agencies.
