FBI agents served a search warrant and seized Sen. Richard Burr’s cell phone as part of an investigation of his mass sell-off of stocks, a law enforcement official told The Los Angeles Times.

Burr, a Republican from North Carolina who also serves as the Senate Intelligence Committee chairman, has been under a Justice Department investigation after selling a significant chunk of his stock portfolio on Feb. 13, when his committee was receiving daily updates on the coronavirus.

A week later, the stock market declined sharply.

The Justice Department is investigating whether Bur violated a law that bars members of Congress from trading on insider information obtained from their privileged position.

Barr sold off between $628,000 and $1.7 million of his portfolio, ProPublica first reported.

The Secret Service was notified that North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr joked about gun owners shooting Hillary Clinton.

The comments were captured on a recording, the Daily Beast reports.

Burr walked into a gun shop and spotted a magazine about rifles in the store “with a picture of Hillary Clinton on the front of it.”

Burr said “nothing made me feel better” than seeing that image.

“I was a little bit shocked at that—it didn’t have a bullseye on it,” Burr jokes to a crowd in Mooresville, North Carolina. “But on the bottom right (of the magazine), it had everybody for federal office in this particular state that they should vote for. So let me assure you, there’s an army of support out there right now for our candidates.”

Burr later apologized, saying, “The comment I made was inappropriate, and I apologize for it.”

On the campaign trail, Donald Trump has quipped about Clinton being killed by gun owners.

WASHINGTON — Heavy handed politics continues to play a role in some of the appointments of U.S. Attorneys around the country.

In North Carolina, Republican Sen. Richard Burr vowed Thursday to delay confirmation of Charlotte lawyer Thomas G. Walker until the current U.S. Attorney George Holding, a Bush appointee, finishes up his probes into ex-Sen. John Edwards and former Gov. Mike Easley, according to the News Observer.

Burr notified President Barack Obama of his decision through the White House counsel’s office, the paper reported. Obama nominated Walker last week.
