FBI Missed Opportunity to Keep Dad Away from Children Before He Killed Self, His Sons

At least 17 months before he killed his children and his staff, Josh Powell was the subject of an FBI investigation in which agents found child porn, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

At the time of the deaths, the FBI was actively investigating the disappearance of Powell’s wife and the discovery of child porn.

An attorney for parents of the wife, Susan Powell, expressed frustration that the investigation was not shared with the Washington Department of Social and Health Services, which could have stopped the dad’s visits with the children.

Instead, Josh Powell lit a fire at his rented home in Graham, Wash., in February 2012 and killed himself and his two sons. Powell’s wife has been missing since 2009.

The FBI declined to comment on the case.

Hoping to help solve a gruesome murder and abduction case in Georgia, the FBI is offering a $20,000 reward for leading to the discovery of the wife of an 88-year-old Georgia man who was found decapitated, CNN reports.

The FBI said it will pay “up to $20,000 for information leading to the location of Shirley Wilcox Dermond and/or the arrest of the individual(s) responsible for her disappearance,” according to Special Agent Stephen Emmett of the FBI’s Atlanta office.

The search also continues for the man’s head after authorities said he was killed between May 2 and May 4.

The FBI posted at least 100 billboards with Dermond’s description throughout Georgia.

Prosecutors: FBI Agents Justified When They Shot, Killed Man in Idaho Wilderness

FBI agents used reasonable force when they fatally shot a kidnapping and murder suspect in the Idaho wilderness last year, the Associated Press reports.

Federal and local prosecutors said Wednesday that the two FBI agents should not face charges because they were justified by shooting James DiMaggio, who was suspected of kidnapping a teenage girls and killing her mother and brother in California.

The decision didn’t sit well with DiMaggio’s sister, Lora DiMaggio Robinson.

“I’m sure the FBI agents who shot and killed my brother, James DiMaggio, are celebrating tonight – over how they won’t be facing any criminal charges,” Robinson said in a statement to The Associated Press. “I wish my brother would have been given the same opportunity of a U.S. attorney’s investigation and possible indictment and then a trial by jury, instead of a bullet in the head and five more to ‘stop’ him.”

Agents shot DiMaggio after he fired two rifle shots.

FBI agents made disturbing discoveries while searching the home of an avowed white supremacist accused of killing three people outside two Kansas Jewish facilities in April.

The Associated Press reports that agents found directions to synagogues and kosher places to eat, a copy of “Mein Kampf” and a T-shirt with a swastika symbol inside the Missouri home of Frazier Glenn Cross.

Cross is charged with killing 69-year-old William Corporon, his 14-year-old grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood, and 53-year-old Terri LaManno outside the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park and a nearby senior care facility.

Federal Crackdown Leads to Arrests of 55 Suspected Members of Violent Crips Gang

The longtime San Diego gang is known for its ruthless violence, from execution-style murders to the shooting of a pregnant woman.

Now U-T San Diego reports that federal authorities nabbed most of the 55 suspected members of the West Coast Crips in pre-dawn raids Thursday, changing them with crimes spanning from murder and armed robberies to prostitution drug dealing.

The suspected mastermind, Randy Alton Graves, was among those arrested.

The crackdown came on the heels of phone surveillance and undercover drug buys, authorities said.

The startling wiretaps reveal that the gangsters “think nothing about murdering rivals in San Diego and they think nothing of executing their own, when their own are even suspected of being disloyal,” U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said at a news conference.

Seized in the raids were 16 guns, more than 4 pounds of meth, 4,400 pounds of pot and $300,000 in counterfeit money.

Frazier Glenn Cross is not only an accused murderer and racist. He’s also a rat with a lot to hide.

ABC News reports that Cross, who is suspected of murder in the shootings of three people outside of Jewish centers, was given a new name, social security number and place to live after becoming an FBI snitch in the late 1980s. In exchange for leniency for fleeing a conviction for criminal contempt, he outed other white nationalists.

“I joined the family in Sioux City, Iowa,” Miller wrote later in his self-published autobiography. “I enrolled in truck driving school…and I’ve been trucking ever since. And I love it. After prison, the freedom of the open road is gloriously exhilarating.”

He was born Frazier Glenn Miller and later became the founder of the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and the paramilitary White Patriot Party in North Carolina.

Diplomat Suspected of Bludgeoning Family in 1976 Added to FBI’s ‘Ten Most Wanted Fugitives’

A diplomat accused of bludgeoning his family to death in their suburban Maryland Home in 1976 was added to the FBI’s list of “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives.”

The Associated Press reports that William Bradford “Brad” Bishop Jr., who worked for the State Department at the time, is suspected of killing his mother, wife and three sons. According to authorities, he then drove their bodies to a wooded area in North Carolina, buried them in a shallow grave and lit them on fire.

Bishop, who would be 77 years old now, is a Yale graduate fluent in five languages.

“Brad, you’ve been living with this on your conscience now for 38 years,” Montgomery County, Md., Sheriff Darren Popkin said. “I am the voice of your family who can no longer speak. The time is now to contact law enforcement.”

Investigators haven’t made much headway in the brutal murder of a Peace Corps volunteer after she claimed a local Peace Corps employee was sexually assaulting girls where she worked in the West African country of Benin five years ago, WPRO.com reports.

On Thursday, 184 members of Congress from both sides of the aisle signed a letter urging the federal government, including the FBI, to “make every effort to devote every resource to achieve justice for Kate Puzey.”

The 24-year-old Georgia resident was murdered on March 12, 2009.

“It continues the visibility of the case in the eyes of the people that need not to lose sight of the tragedy,” said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-GA, a co-author of the letter and advocate for the Puzey family.

The letter was addressed to the FBI, Department of State and Inspector General of the Peace Corps.
