The DEA is recommending an increase in the amount of marijuana grown for research while reducing the production of opioids.

The agency, which has long resisted research that could lead to the legalization of cannabis, wants to more than quintuple the amount of marijuana that can be grown for research, according to a DEA news release.

In an upcoming Federal Register filing, the amount of marijuana that could be produced for research would increase to about 5,400 pounds.

At the same time, the DEA wants to reduce the production of six types opioids by 10% over the next year.

It would be the third time the DEA has imposed limits on the amount of opioids made in the U.S.

Is the DEA running out of ideas to reverse the seismic shift in attitudes about marijuana?

DEA Chief Michele Leonhart told congressional members this week that pot can kill Fido, citing evidence that dogs have died after eating marijuana-infused food, the Huffington Post reports.

“There was just an article last week, and it was on pets. It was about the unanticipated or unexpected consequences of this, and how veterinarians now are seeing dogs come in, their pets come in, and being treated because they’ve been exposed to marijuana,” Leonhart said.

Leonart is referring to dogs that have eaten edibles and was referencing a USA Today story that said dogs could die while throwing up pot products, like butter. But Leonart didn’t mention that the article added that “marijuana itself isn’t particularly harmful to dogs,” and that dogs rarely eat marijuana by itself.

With all the drug-related violence and craziness along the Mexican-U.S. border, we seldom hear much about canada border the Canada-U.S. border.

The Toronto Star reports that the “hardening of the Canada-U.S. border” has resulted in a fourfold increase in marijuana seizures.

U.S. authorities seized 17,915 kilos of Canadian-grown marijuana during the year ending Sept. 30, compared to 4,325 kilos the previous year, according to figures to be released Friday by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, the paper reported.

The paper said U.S. border officials attributed increased seizures to better cross-border police cooperation and new technology including unmanned aerial drones.
