The Detroit Free Press reports some puzzling matters surrounding the death of Detroit imam  Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who was shot and killed by four FBI agents during a raid in a suburban warehouse in Dearborn in October 2009.

The paper reports that the four FBI agents were not interviewed by investigators until more than six months later, in May and June, and that the FBI files “contain letters that show their attorney initially declining to let them be interviewed by Dearborn police. The FBI agent who fired eight shots at Abdullah was interviewed in June from Baghdad, Iraq.”

All the agents were cleared of wrongdoing in multiple investigations on the shooting, which stemmed from a raid involving a probe into stolen goods.

The paper also reported that Dearborn police, which investigated the shooting, “expressed concern about their inability at times to get evidence for their investigation of the fatal shooting, according to the records.

“Shortly after the shooting, the FBI removed the hard drives of surveillance video footage it made of the shootings with five covert cameras placed in the warehouse. Dearborn police ‘objected to removal of the hard drives,’ an FBI report said, but the FBI then later provided the department with copies for its investigation, which cleared the FBI of any wrongdoing.”

The Justice Department announced Wednesday that the FBI agents who shot and killed Detroit imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah last October during a raid did not violate federal civil rights laws and did not “warrant further federal criminal investigation.”

The announcement came nearly two weeks after the Michigan Attorney General concluded the FBI violated no state laws when it fatally shot a  the Detroit mosque leader during a raid of a suburban warehouse.

A Justice Department press release issued Wednesday said “the department conducted a complete, thorough, and independent review of this matter. The review included examining all documents witness accounts, forensic evidence and reports, and operational plans and procedures that were generated by an FBI Inspection Division inquiry, a Dearborn Police Department investigation, and the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office.”

A 300-page police report released Friday stated that  20 FBI agents and three others in  law enforcement  said they heard agents warn Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah to show his hands or they’d send in a police dog, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The report backed the conclusion this week by the Michigan Attorney General, who found agents acted properly.

The imam was shot and killed by agents during a raid on a Deaborn warehouse involving stolen goods. Other law enforcement agents who mentioned teh warnings were from the U.S. Border Patrol, Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and ICE, the Free Press reported.

The paper reported that agents released the dog, which bit him. Abdullah fired three shots in the direction of the agents and the dog, which was killed. No agents were injured. Abdullah was killed after four FBI agents fired 20 times.

The police report said the FBI brought in 14 agents from the elite Quantico, Va. squad known as Hostage Rescue Team to help the Detroit FBI, and three of the four agents who shot Abdullah were from that unit, the Free Press reported.

The controversy over the FBI’s fatal shooting of a Detroit imam last October may not go away any time soon.

The Detroit Free Press reports that a noted pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht, who did a pathology report at the request of the Michigan Chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR),  has raised many questions, but did not conclude whether the shooting was justified.

For one, Wecht found the Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah was shot twice in the back, not once as the Wayne County Medical Examiner reported, the Free Press wrote. The FBI shot the imam 21 times after he shot and killed an FBI dog during a raid on a Dearborn warehouse where the imam was suspected of being involved in a stolen goods ring.

The pathologist also found that the imam had bites and claw marks from the FBI dog and that the dog fractured his jaw.

A highly respected and tenacious former Wayne County prosecutor, who prosecuted many high-profile cases, has been picked by the Michigan Attorney General to investigate the FBI’s fatal shooting last October of a Detroit Imam during a raid, the Detroit Free Press reported Monday.

Attorney General Mike Cox picked former Wayne County Prosecutor Doug Baker as an assistant special attorney general to look into the death of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who was shot 20 times by federal agents during an arrest in a stolen goods sting, the Free Press reported.

The FBI has said the Abdullah had shot and killed a dog before agents opened fire. It insists it did nothing improper.

John Sellek, a spokesman for the Attorney General, told the Free Press that Baker will determine whether the FBI violated any laws during the incident.

Islamic groups have raised questions about the shooting, which the  Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has declined to get involved in, the Free Press reported.

It also reported that the FBI has forwarded its findings in the shooting to the Attorney General.

Federal agents shot a Muslim imam 21 times and then handcuffed him during an October FBI raid in Dearborn, a Detroit suburb, a yet to be released autopsy report concluded, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Free Press reporter  Ben Schmitt, who attributed the information to a “person familiar with the case”, also wrote that the source said the handcuffing “was in line with procedure.”

Luqman Ameen Abdullah, the Detroit imam, was shot and killed Oct. 28 at a Dearborn warehouse during a shoot out with agents, who had come to arrest him and ten others for allegedly dealing in stolen property, the paper reported.

The FBI, which has publicly defended the shooting, has said the cleric opened fire first, killing an FBI dog.
