WASHINGTON — Weeks after a white supremacist shot and killed a guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington in 2009, White House senior adviser David Axelrod showed up at his favorite Chicago Jewish deli with an entourage of Secret Service agents.

In the past, he had no protection. But in July 2009, it was different. He was spotted with the added protection at Manny’s, a cafeteria-style deli on South Jefferson Street.

At the time, few knew why he suddenly was getting protection, though it was clear plenty of citizens around the nation were up in arms over President Barack Obama’s push for health care reform.

But now Time magazine reports that the Holocaust museum shooter, James von Brunn, who shot and killed an African-American guard, also had someone else on his list: David Axelrod. The magazine suggests the threat prompted the new protection detail.

WASHINGTON — James von Brunn, the man charged with fatally shooting the Holocaust Museum guard in Washington in June will remain in a North Carolina prison until early January so the facility can complete psychiatric tests.

The warden at the Federal Medical Center at Butner, N.C. asked for more time because of  von Brunn’s  “several chronic medical ailments, which have inhibited the Federal Bureau of Prisons from conducting several tests and procedures necessary to render a comprehensive neuropsychiatric diagnostic assessment,” said a court order accomodating the prison’s request, which was signed earlier this month by U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton.

WASHINGTON — The elderly white supremacist accused of killing a guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in June was on a suicide mission and had planned the attack months in advance, a federal prosecutor said in court Wednesday.

Prosecutor Nicole Waid made the accusations during a brief hearing in the District’s federal court during which the suspect, James W. von Brunn, 89, spoke publicly for the first time since the shooting.

“The Constitution guarantees me a speedy and fair trial,” he said, sitting in a wheelchair, next to his defense attorney.
