Iceland Removed Two FBI Agents During Worldwide WikiLeaks Investigation

Steve Neavling

Iceland expelled two FBI agents who were trying to interview an unidentified WikiLeaks associate in August 2011, the country’s interior minister revealed Friday, Info Security Magazine reports.

Interior Minister Ögmundur Jónasson said FBI agents showed up unannounced to Iceland, long a supporter of free speech.

“Jónasson demanded that the FBI agents pack their bags, get back on board, and leave the country,” WikiLeaks spokesperson in Iceland, Kristinn Hrafnsson said. “The matter was then brought before the cabinet and a formal protest was issued to US authorities.”

Jonasson defended his decision.

“I, for one, was not aware that they were coming to Iceland,” he said. “When I learned about it, I demanded that Icelandic police cease all cooperation and made it clear that people interviewed or interrogated in Iceland should be interrogated by Icelandic police.”

It’s Out: Whitey Bulger Tipster is Former Miss Iceland

Updated Bulger photo/wbur

The former Miss Iceland Anna Bjornsdottir was splitting her time between Iceland and Santa Monica, Calif. when, at home in Iceland, she saw a photo of her Santa Monica neighbors, Carole and Charlie Gasko, flash across the TV screen, according to CBS Boston. The Gaskos’ were actually mob boss Whitey Bulger and girlfriend Carole Greig. Bjornsdottir called the FBI.

While the tip led the FBI to Bulger, some say the FBI’s inability to protect Bjornsdottir’s identity may harm not only her safety but the integrity of the whole tipster program, reports the Boston Herald.

“They can’t guarantee her 100 percent safety going forward,” former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan told the Herald. “It’s unnecessary publicity and unnecessary harassment.”

CBS Boston reports that Bjornsdottir bonded with Whitey’s girlfriend Carole over a stray cat. “Cathy took this cat under her wing. She would come out every morning and feed this cat. While she was feeding the cat, Anna was stop, and they would talk. They developed a bit of a bond,” CBS Boston quotes a Boston Globe report.

FBI Tipster Got $100,000 Reward for Bulger’s Girlfriend and $2 Mil for Bulger

By Allan Lengel

The person who tipped off the FBI about the whereabouts of Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, not only got $2 million for that tip, but got an extra $100,000 for the capture of Bulger’s girlfriend Catherine Greig, the Boston Globe reported.

The FBI issued a statement saying:

“As of Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, the FBI has paid this reward money to more than one individual. To protect the anonymity and privacy of those responsible for providing information which directly led to the arrests of Mr. Bulger and Ms. Greig, the FBI will not comment further regarding this matter.’’

Law enforcement official previously identified the tipster as a woman from Iceland.

That hasn’t sat so well with Keith Messina, 45, of Las Vegas, who has told the Boston newspapers that he should have gotten some of the reward for tipping off “America’s Most Wanted’’ in June 2008 after spotting Bulger on the Santa Monica Pier in California.

The FBI has refused to cough up any cash for Messina.

Bulger is a suspect in 19 murders.

Las Vegas Man Fuming He Didn’t Get Any of FBI’s $2 Mil Reward for Capture of Boston Mobster Whitey Bulger

A Las Vegas man is fuming over the fact the FBI has written a $2 million reward check to an Iceland woman who reportedly tipped off authorities about the whereabouts of fugitive mobster James “Whitey” Bulger in June.

The Boston Herald reported that Keith Messina, 45, the manager of a Subway and father of three,  says he spotted Bulger on a beach in California in 2008 and tipped off authorities, but nothing happened. He said he deserves a reward.

The Herald reports that Messina said the “feds” called him about a month ago to say they were writing the check to a woman in Iceland who spotted Bulger.

“I’m peeved,” Messina said, according to the Boston Herald “I would have been happy with half. I did all the work and you give it to a person in Iceland? The FBI is hiding something.”

“The feds told me ‘We’re writing the check as I speak’ to the woman, ” Messina said in a telephone call from his Las Vegas home.

The feds nabbed Bulger in June in Santa Monica, Calif., along with his longtime companion Catherine Greig.

Messina told the Herald that he spotted Bulger in Santa Monico in 2008 reading a book near the Pacific Ocean.

“I was sitting in front of him next to the chess area. He was standing up reading a thick, brown book,” the 45-year-old Subway manager said. “I want half the money, if not all.”

The paper reported that Messina immediately reported his find  and also told the Fox show “America’s Most Wanted.”

“I want the truth for the people in Boston,” Messina said, according to the Herald. “They deserve straight answers.”
