FBI Director Comey: ISIS-Inspired Attacks Targeting Fourth of July Were Foiled

Federal agents likely disrupted a terror attack on the Fourth of July weekend by making dozens of arrests in the last four weeks, FBI Director James Comey said Thursday.

“I do believe our work disrupted efforts to kill people, likely in connection with July 4,” Comey told reporters at FBI headquarters in Washington, NBC News reports.

U.S. authorities were worried about an attack on the holiday weekend.

Comey said ISIS-inspired actions often don’t involve elaborate plots and usually are spontaneous acts.

“It’s actually hard to figure out when they’re trying to kill somebody,” Comey said. “And you cannot say, ‘Well, we’ve got to do it on the Fourth.’ Because you know you have people who are motivated to kill people, and they are unreliable in terms of when they’re going to act.”

Some of the arrests over the past four weeks would have targeted the holiday weekend, Comey said.

“We made the arrests to thwart what we thought they were up to,” he added. “Some of them were focused on the Fourth of July, and that’s as specific as I can get.”

FBI Establishes Command Centers in Event of Terrorist Attack This Weekend

By Steve Neavling

To monitor potential terrorist threats on the Fourth of July weekend, the FBI is establishing command centers so federal authorities can respond quickly in the event of an attack, Fox News reports.

While the FBI has no credible threats, it is concerned about ISIS and other homegrown terrorists during the holiday weekend. Terrorist attacks were launched in three countries Friday.

The command centers will be used to gather information from local, state and federal law enforcement.

Federal Authorities Warn of Possible Terrorist Attack in U.S. on Fourth of July Weekend

By Steve Neavling

Federal authorities have warned of the potential for a terrorist attack targeting the Fourth of July holiday in the U.S.

The bulletins prepared by Homeland Security and the FBI urged local law enforcement to be alert because of ongoing threats posed by ISIS and other homegrown terrorists, the USA Today reports.

There were no specific threats.

The warnings come just days after three terrorist attacks in three countries Friday.

Federal officials recently arrested Americans allegedly invovled ISIS-inspired attacks.

DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said local law enforcement should be “vigilant and prepared.”

“We will also adjust security measures, seen and unseen, as necessary to protect the American people,” Johnson said. “We continue to encourage all Americans to attend public events and celebrate this country during this summer season, but always remain vigilant.”
