WASHINGTON — Crooked lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who epitomized all that was wrong with official Washington, is close to seeing daylight.

The Associated Press reported that Abramoff, 51, was released Tuesday from a minimum-security federal prison in Cumberland, Md, and sent to a halfway house in that state to finish off his sentence for fraud, corruption and conspiracy. He went off to prison in 2006.

He is set to be free on Dec. 4, AP reported.

Abramoff cooperated in a multi-year Justice Department investigation into public corruption that resulted in convictions of ex-Rep. Robert W. Ney (R-Ohio), ex-deputy interior Secretary J. Steven Griles and several Capitol Hill aides, AP reported.

WASHINGTON — Suspended NBA Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas dodged the bullet Friday during sentencing. He won’t be going to jail, but he will have to spend 30 days in a halfway house and two years on probation, the Associated Press reported.

The D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office had recommended a 3 month jail sentence, saying Arenas was not remorseful and was less than candid about bringing four guns to the locker room at the Verizon Center and getting into a confrontation with a teammate Javaris Crittenon.

After getting in a gambling dispute with Crittenton, he brought the guns to the Verizon Center and put them in front of Crittenton’s locker with a note that said to pick one.

D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert Morin also ordered Arenas to perform 400 hours of community service and contribute $5,000 to a victims of violence fund, CNN reported.

Ex-Ref Tim Donaghy, who disgraced the NBA in a betting scandal, thought it would be ok to go to a health club instead of work. The U.S. Marshals thought differently.

Philadelphia Daily News

Tim Donaghy, the ex-NBA referee who served time in a federal prison camp for betting on basketball games, got called for a traveling violation Monday – and it cost him a trip to the county prison.

The Delaware County native, who has been living at a Tampa, Fla., halfway house since he was released from the prison camp in mid-June, thought it was perfectly OK to visit a local health club Friday, according to his lawyer.

The feds thought otherwise, and decided Monday morning to toss him into the Orient Road Jail for the unauthorized trip.
