Crazed gunman Jared Loughner was found competent to stand trial on Tuesday. He then immediately pleaded guilty to 19 charges in a shooting spree last year in Tucson that left six people dead including a federal judge, and 13 wounded including ex-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Loughner murdered U.S. District Judge John Roll and Giffords staffer Gabe Zimmerman. He also wounded Giffords employees Pam Simon and Ron Barber, the latter who succeeded Giffords as U.S. representative from Tucson, the Arizona Republic reported.

In exchange for the plea, the government agreed not to seek the death penalty.

In a ruling that comes as little surprise, a federal judge on Wednesday in Arizona ruled that Jared L. Loughner, who killed 6 and wounded 13 others including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, is not mentally competent to stand trial, the New York Times reported.

U.S. District Judge  Larry A. Burns of  Tucson ruled that Loughner will be sent to a psychiatric facility until Sept. 21. At that point,  a hearing will be held to revisit his competency,   the New York Times reported.

If his status remains the same, he’ll be periodically re-evaluated.

“At the present time, Mr. Loughner does not have a rational understanding of these proceedings,” Judge Burns said, according to the Times.

The Times reported that the judge issued the ruling minutes after Loughner, 22, was dragged out of the courtroom. At one point he shouted, according to the Times:

“Thank you for the freak show. She died right in front of me. You’re treasonous.”

WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mi.), a former FBI agent, criticized the decision by President Obama to dispatch FBI director Robert S. Mueller to Arizona after the mass shooting on Saturday, according to the radio station WHMI in Livingston County, Mi., outside Detroit.

“He didn’t need to be in Arizona to be updated frequently and this is a very serious matter and I just hope…We don’t to overreact to the full implementation for successful investigation,” Rogers told WHMI.

“They are fully capable of doing it without the Director himself being on the ground in Arizona,” said Rogers who was an FBI agent in Chicago from 1988-1994 where he investigated public corruption.

Rogers also told the station it makes his “blood boil” when pundits try to implicate Sarah Palin in the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Az) because of her website which included bulls eye on lawmakers who supported the Obama healthcare.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona issued a statement in honor of Chief Judge John M. Roll, 63,  who was shot and killed on Saturday in Tucson in a mass shooting that killed six and wounded 12 including Democratic Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

The following is the statement:

“The U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona has suffered a grievous loss today with the untimely death of Chief Judge John M. Roll, who was shot and killed when a gunman opened fire on a crowd at an event hosted by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona.”

“Judge Roll was appointed to the federal bench in 1991, and served as chief judge of the district since 2006. The devoted husband, father of three, grandfather of five, and friend to all who knew him, will be greatly missed by his family and community.”

“He was a warm, compassionate judge and inspirational leader in what is one of the busiest districts in the country. His death will leave a significant void in the District of Arizona and the entire federal judiciary, and we are all deeply saddened.”

ABOUT THE SHOOTER

UPDATED: Sunday, 3 p.m. :  FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III said at a press conference that he doesn’t believe a second person wanted for questioning is directly involved in the shooting.

“It was an attack not only against dedicated public servants but against citizens, one being a child,” Mueller said. “This was an attack on our institutions and an attack on our way of life.” CNN, citing sources, said the man has been interviewed and authorities have determined that he has nothing to do with this case.

UPDATED: Sunday 6:14 p.m. The FBI announced that charges have been filed against the shooter and the second person they were looking for is no longer a person of interest.
