Secret Service Calls “Inaccurate” a Report in The Atlantic About an Agent Discharging His Gun and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

By Allan Lengel

The Secret Service on Thursday issued a statement, calling “inaccurate” a story in The Atlantic entitled “How the Secret Service Almost Shot Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”

Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman, stated:

“In September of 2007, one of our personnel assigned to the Iranian presidential protective detail accidentally discharged one round from a Heckler & Koch MP-5 into the floorboard of a Secret Service vehicle while conducting an equipment inspection. At the time of the discharge the vehicle was parked in a motorcade staging area at the United Nations. There were no protectees or foreign security personnel in the vicinity of the vehicle at the time of the discharge. There were no injuries sustained by anyone as a result of the incident.”

“The Secret Service takes weapons handling and safety very seriously and a full investigation was conducted by our Inspection Division at that time. This matter was handled internally and in an appropriate manner.”

The Atlantic reported that President George Bush’s daily intelligence brief contained this: “A U.S. Secret Service agent, in an apparent accident, discharged his shotgun as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was loading his motorcade at the InterContinental Hotel yesterday.”

The Atlantic wrote:

The agent was adjusting the side-mounted shotgun on one of the motorcade’s armored follow-up Suburbans when it discharged. “Everyone just stopped. The Iranians looked at us and we looked at the Iranians. The agent began to apologize. Ahmadinejad just turned his head and got into his car.” And that was it.

U.S. Secret Service Scandal Brews in Colombia Over Prostitutes

By Allan Lengel

The Secret Service, which normally tries to stay in the background and garner as little attention as possible, is causing an international stir.

CBS News reports that a dozen Secret Service agents were sent home from Colombia before the President arrived Friday for the Summit of Americas. The New York Times later reported the number as being 11. It reported that it included agents and officers.

A Secret Service source told CBS News that one or more of the officers were involved with prostitutes and that there was a dispute over payment.

CBS reported that one prostitute went to the police, who notified the State Department. CBS reported that two were supervisors and the other were assigned to logistics.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan confirmed the removal of personnel, according to CBS News and said in a statement: “There have been allegations of misconduct made against Secret Service personnel in Cartagena, Colombia prior to the President’s trip. Because of this, those personnel are being relieved of their assignments, returned to their place of duty, and are being replaced by other Secret Service personnel.”

Ex-Secret Service Agent Trashes Hillary Clinton in Book; Calls Her Aloof

By Allan Lengel

A tell-all book by an ex-Secret Service agent who worked the President Clinton detail is bound to ruffle some feathers inside the Beltway.

The  Examiner newspaper reports that ex-Secret Service agent Dan Emmett has written a self-published book “Within Arms’s Length” that “savages the Clinton White House staff as arrogant and rude, suggests former first lady Hillary Clinton was aloof and charges that Bill Clinton endangered himself and agents for a ‘totally pointless photo op’ on the South Korea-North Korea border.”

Emmett also wrote that Clinton’s young staff was rude and arrogant, the Examiner wrote

“Most of these youngsters were from wealthy families, and many viewed Secret Services agents as the hired help,” Emmett writes in “Within Arms’s Length,” an autobiography that provides new details of the inner Secret Service.

Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service told the Examiner:

“We do stress to all our employees the importance of not sharing anecdotes about the personal, private moments of the protectees. It causes concern because we don’t want to erode the trust that we have with our protectees.”

Secret Service Agent Accused of Raping S.C. Woman After Arrest

By Danny Fenster

A South Carolina woman who’s headed off to prison claims a Secret Service agent raped her after her arrest, according to the Associated Press.

The woman alleged in court documents that the agent took advantage of her on a couch in his office after arresting her on embezzlement charges, AP reported. The woman alleged that the agent warned her not to tell anyone or she’d be in bigger trouble.

She is asking that the judge toss out her sentence, and said the judge was never apprised of the allegations.

Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman in Washington, told on Monday that the  matter has been referred to the Office of Professional Responsibility for investigation.

The woman ended up pleading guilty and getting sentenced to 15 months in prison, AP reported. She is scheduled to report to prison on Tuesday.

AP did not identify the woman, saying it generally does not identify alleged sexual assault victims.

Greyhound it ain’t.

The U.S. Secret Service has purchased a new $1.1 million bus that President Barack Obama is using for his travels through the Midwest, the Associated Press reported.

The AP described the bus as “an impenetrable-looking conveyance the size of a cross-country Greyhound, painted all in black, with dark tinted windows and flashing red and blue lights.”

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told the AP the bus wasn’t purchased solely for the president and would be used for other dignitaries. He said the agency also purchased a second bus.

He told AP that the Secret Service was overdue for some buses for protections of politicians traveling around the country by bus.

Under the category of: Mmmmmm. Something doesn’t seem right.

The Associated Press reports that the U.S. Secret Service, which protects  VP Joe Biden,  is paying Biden $2,200 a month to rent a cottage next to his suburban Wilimington, Del., home.

Records show Biden has collected more than $13,000 since April on the cottage, and is eligible to collect up to $66,000 before the contract expires in 2013, AP reported.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told the Washington Times:  “It’s a rental property so we pay rent there.”

Citizens Against Government Waste’s Leslie Paige said you would think with Biden so deeply involved in the deficit talks that he would think twice about charging the government agency, AP reported.

Yes, you would think.

Man’s Car Hops Curb; Gets Unexpected Greeting From Secret Service Protecting Pres. Bush

By Allan Lengel

A motorist tooling around an upscale Dallas neighborhood Wednesday night got an unexpected greeting from U.S. Secret Service agents when his muscle car accidentally hopped the curb and ended up on the lawn of a certain prominent person.

Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman, said the man was driving sometime around 7:30 p.m. to visit a friend in the Preston Hollow neighborhood in Dallas when he apparently lost control of the car, which jumped onto the lawn of former President George W. Bush.  Donovan said it appeared the gas pedal was stuck.

Secret Service agents, who are on the scene 24/7, quickly responded, as did the Dallas police, Donovan said. The man was interviewed and was allowed to go. Donovan said there was no indication the man intended to harm the President and his wife Laura, who were home at the time. There was no damage to the home.

Media reports indicated the car was a Mercury Cougar.

WASHINGTON — In this town, there’s a few simple rules. One of them is very very simple: Don’t get in the way of Presidential motorcade. The Secret Service takes that pretty seriously.

On Thursday night, U.S. Secret Service police subdued two men who failed to get out of the way of the Presidential motorcade after President Obama was returning home to the White House from a visit to a school event for one of his daughters, the Associated Press reported.

AP, attributing information to Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan, said the men were charged with assaulting a police officer and failure to obey a lawful order. Their identities were not immediately released. He said the incident appeared to be random.
