Homeland Security Requires All Employees to Wear Masks Following New CDC Advice

By Steve Neavling

By Steve Neavling

As COVID-19 cases make a resurgence, Homeland Security and other federal agencies are requiring all employees to wear masks indoors and socially distance.

The mandate comes after the White House said masks must be worn in all federal buildings. On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that vaccinated people should mask up indoors in areas where COVID-19 is on the rise.

“Beginning today, all employees, regardless of vaccination status, will be required to wear a mask indoors & physically distance,” Homeland Security tweeted Wednesday.

Also on Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said he’s working from home because he had come in close contact with an employee who later tested positive for COVID-19.

Other federal law enforcement agencies have not yet publicly announced mask mandates.

President Biden is expected to discuss mask requirements for federal employees today.

Maskless DOJ Employees Won’t Have to Prove Vaccination Status, Memo Says

Justice Department employees won’t have to prove they were vaccinated if they decide to enter the agency’s buildings without a mask.

In a memo obtained by The Hill, managers were instructed not to ask employees about their vaccination status.

The memo comes just after vaccinated federal employees were given permission to go inside the agency’s buildings without a mask following new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Supervisors and managers should not ask about an employee’s vaccination status or use information about an employee’s vaccination status to make decisions about how and when employees will report to a workplace instead of teleworking,” the DOJ told employees in a Friday email.

The new policy is in stark contrast to the DOJ’s guidance in February that gave employers permission to inquire about their employees’ vaccination status.

The email on Friday said employees have the option to continue wearing masks.

“As we go forward, we ask everyone to respect the wishes of our colleagues and visitors and ensure that anyone who chooses to continue wearing a mask while in department buildings and facilities may continue to do so without interference,” DOJ said.

CBP Finds Human Brain in Shipment Coming from Canada

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers were in for a surprise when they inspected a Canadian mail truck that had crossed the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, Mich.

They found a human brain specimen inside a glass jar. It was not accompanied by any of the mandated paperwork or documentation to bring the brain into the country, CBP says in a news release.

The shipment originated in Toronto and was headed for Kenosha, Wis.

“Individuals looking to import shipments such as this, need to remember that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a strict Import Permit Program that must be adhered to,” Area Port Director Michael Fox said. “This is just another great example of just one of the many things CBP officers do to protect our nation on a daily basis.”

CBP has notified the CDC of the discovery.

Sen. Chuck Schumer is calling on the ATF and CDC to help the FBI investigate the deaths of Americans in the Dominican Republic.

“With the spate of sicknesses & deaths of New Yorkers & Americans vacationing in the Dominican Republic,” Democrat from New York tweeted, “The federal government must double its efforts on getting to the bottom of things.”

At least nine Americans have died following similar symptoms while vacationing in the Dominican Republic since June 2018.

“ATF & more CDC experts should help the FBI with fact-finding. Now,” the Senate minority leader said.

The FBI is assisting the Dominican Republic with toxicological analysis.

The Continuing Rapid Rise of Seizures and Overdose Fatalities Involving Fentanyl

By Ross Parker

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) issued an alert this week about the continuing rapid rise of seizures and overdose fatalities involving fentanyl. As reported in this column last June, fentanyl is a fast-acting opioid , 50-100 times stronger than morphine, that is now being used by sellers to mix with heroin in order to increase the “high.” The problem is that the substance is so much more potent that users often do not know of this increase and have a greater risk of suffering a fatal overdose.

The danger posed by this development has risen dramatically in the last three years, and the increase in 2014 was at epidemic levels. DEA has responded with ramping up enforcement activity. Seizures have gone from 618 in 2012, 949 in 2013, to a staggering 4,585 in 2014. These seizures are concentrated in ten states, with Ohio having the highest number of seizures (1,245), followed by Massachusetts (630), and Pennsylvania (419).

Most of this rise has been from illegal manufacturing operations rather than diversion of pharmaceutically produced drugs, according to a report by the DEA Office of Diversion Control. The alert was reported in this week’s Medscape Medical News.

The CDC asked law enforcement to participate in expanded surveillance and record-keeping programs, along with medical examiners and emergency rooms, to report these seizures to local public health departments. It also warned law enforcement officers to take special safety precautions to avoid exposure to the drug either through skin contact or by inadvertently inhaling it.

Armed Security Guard Who Took Elevator Trip with President Obama Was Fired

The highlight of Kenneth Tate’s career as a private security guard was riding an elevator with President Obama in Atlanta.

That ride has cost Tate his $42,000-a-year job, the New York Times reports.

President Obama was visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when Tate took the elevator ride.

It was later discovered that Tate was carrying a CDC-issued firearm, a security lapse and embarrassment for the Secret Service.

Tate said it’s unfair that he was fired because he was only doing what he was told to do.

“It was something to tell my mom — if I meet him everything will be complete,” he said of meeting the president. “I didn’t know it was going to be my job.”

TSA Cleans Up Checkpoints After Nurse with Ebola Travels Through Cleveland Airport

A passenger with the Ebola virus traveled through the security checkpoints at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, prompting TSA to disinfect the areas, the Plain Dealer reports.

The patient, Amber Joy Vinson, walked through the central security checkpoint while en route to Dallas/Fort Worth.

Individual lanes to the checkpoints will be closed for cleanup, the TSA announced.

“It’s nothing official,” TSA spokesman Mark Howell said, noting that the precaution wasn’t undertaken at the direction of the Centers for Disease Control. “It’s just something that our folks wanted to do, in an overabundance of caution.”

The TSA discovered which checkpoints Vinson went through using closed circuit television system.

Officials also are cleaning the jet in which the patient was a passenger.

Vinson is the second Texas nurse to be diagnosed with Ebola.
