Ex-Congressman Jesse L. Jackson Jr., who had a promising political career, and a famous father, was sentenced Wednesday to 2 1/2 years in prison for stealing more than $750,000 in campaign money, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“I misled the American people, I misled the House of Representatives,” Jackson, 48, said in court. “I was wrong and I do not fault anyone.”

His wife, former Ald. Sandi Jackson, was hit with a  12 month sentence, the paper reported.  The judge noted that she spent campaign funds that included $5,000 in furs and parkas “in one day.”

FBI Agents spread out across West Virginia on Tuesday night to question employees of the state Treasurer John Perdue about $1,000 campaign contributions made to his unsuccessful Democratic gubernatorial primary campaign last spring, reports the Charleston Gazette.

“A number of individuals are being interviewed this evening,” U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin told the paper. “Beyond that, I can’t comment further.”

The FBI and the US Attorney’s Office were already investigating a property sale by Perdue, but the new questioning indicates a widening of the scope of the investigation. They questioned employees over whether they had donated $1,000 themselves or had been given the money to donate to their boss, an illegal practice.

Thirty-five employees of the Treasurer’s Office donated $1,000 each — the maximum allowed — to Perdue’s campaign. Some of the donators earned less than $35,000 a year, according to the Gazette, which raised questions as to how they could afford such a contribution.

This document is likely to show up in the trial of ex-Gov. Blagojevich, portraying him as a shakedown artist. Whatever the case, you can certainly say this man knew how to raise funds. Now he needs to raise funds for his legal bills.

CHICAGO — Four potential candidates for President Obama’s vacant Senate seat were each to be targeted for contributions by ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s campaign as part of an aggressive, $2.3 million race for cash late last year, an internal campaign document obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times shows.

The four were among about 150 people targeted for contributions by the Friends of Blagojevich campaign organization by the end of 2008, when a new Illinois law took effect that bans taking money from state contractors and appointees, the document shows.

Sources also said Blagojevich was worried at the time about his growing legal bills.
