In case you hadn’t notice, NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly is no shrinking violet.

So one day after FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III testified before Congress that he hadn’t bothered to call Kelly about the latest al Qaeda/ underwear bomber plot, Kelly spoke up. FBI agents waited a week to brief Kelly’s folks.

“We can’t be treated like just any other city,” Kelly insisted Thursday, according to the NY Daily News. “We had 14 plots here. We had almost 3,000 people killed just five blocks from [City Hall\]. We had another attack in 1993. We’re different.”

“I’m not looking for a call from the FBI director,” added Kelly, who called Mueller “a personal friend.”

“I’m looking for information as quickly as possible for New York City.”

CIA Foiled al Qaeda Plot to Blow Up U.S. Bound Airliner

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

The CIA foiled a plot by al-Qaida’s affiliate in Yemen to bomb a U.S.-bound airliner around the one-year anniversary of the killing of its former leader Osama bin Laden, senior U.S. officials told NBC News.

Officials said the plot involved a bomb with a design that upgraded the underwear bomb taken aboard a jetliner over Detroit on Christmas 2009. That explosive device failed to detonate.

The improved bomb had a more refined detonation mechanism, but was still intended to be hidden in a passenger’s underwear. Officials told NBC News the device was “totally non-metallic,” which would have made it more difficult to detect with traditional screening.

An official told NBC News no airlines were ever at risk. The plot was disrupted well before it threatened Americans or U.S. allies, the official added.

In the war on terror, success can sometimes bring retaliation.

Global terrorist Fahd al-Quso, who had links to the USS Cole bombing, was killed in Yemen Sunday, according to Yemeni officials and confirmed by al-Qaeda, reports USA Today.

A CIA drone strike killed the top al-Qaeda leader, on the FBI Most-Wanted list for the bombing of of the ship in 2000. The CIA mission was coordinated with the U.S. military and Yemeni government, who have been partners in battle against al-Qaeda in southern Yemen.

Reports indicate that a surprise attack by al-Qaeda militants against a Yemeni army base early Monday may have been retaliation for the death of al-Quso. The cycle of violence continues as the militants killed 20 soldiers, captured 25, and made off with weapons and hardware by land and sea, according to USA Today.

Al-Quso was released from a Yemeni prison in 2007, having served 5 years for his role in the USS Cole bombing in which 17 American sailors were killed and 39 injured. He was also implicated in the failed Underwear bomber attempt, in a 2009 Christmas flight over Detroit.

Bin Laden’s Letters Show al Qaeda on the Ropes; Used Viagra and Hair Dye

Osama bin Laden

U.S. Navy SEALS took out the worlds’ foremost terrorist when they killed Osama bin Laden one year ago. But they also scored the largest batch of senior terrorist material in history, and Thursday we saw the release of 17 of those letters, portraying al Qaeda as an organization on the edge.

The total cache of material seized in the SEALS raid includes about 6,000 documents written between 2006 and 2011, recovered from “five computers, dozens of hard drives and more than 100 storage devices” reports CNN, and include the letters just released by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York.

The letters expose bin Laden as “a terrorist on the edge” according to CNN, just another aging leader, dealing with typical organizational and personal problems in extraordinary context.

He mentions using Just for Men hair dye and viagra, worrying about al Qaeda’s media image and the increasing chaos of al Qaeda’s far-flung operations.

He called for increased coordination, self-reviews from al Qaeda leaders, and apologies to fellow Muslims for internal attacks; he felt these had damaged Arab support for al Qaeda and should be addressed publicly.

Bin Laden continued to advocate for airplane attacks, and wanted to target President Obama and General Petraeus, deeming Joe Biden as unfit to lead the U.S.

CNN terrorism analyst Peter Bergen suggested that bin Laden was an “inveterate micromanager but was also someone almost delusional in his belief that his organization could still force a change in American foreign policies in the Muslim world.”

Conviction for al Quaeda Operative Who Intentionally Crashed Car on U.S. Highway and Plotted NYC Subway Bombing

Shoshanna Utchenik

Authorities called it one of the most serious terrorist plots against America since 9/11.

On Tuesday,  28-year-old Adis Medunjanin of Queens paid for that ambitious plot.

Medunjanin was convicted on terror charges on Tuesday in New York fed court after a 4-week trial exposed the depth of his plots with former high school classmates, Najibullah Zazi and Zarein Ahmedzay.

In 2008, the three received training from al Qaeda in Waziristan, states a Justice Department press release, where they were advised to return to New York for a maximum impact suicide-bombing mission. The plotters planned to blow themselves up at rush hour in a Manhattan subway because, as Zazi testified, the transit system is “the heart of everything in New York City.”

However, the trio noticed they were being observed before they could carry out the plot. Zazi remembered telling his co-conspirators “I think law enforcement is on us. We are done.”

After the FBI searched Medunjanin’s apartment in 2010, he attempted to martyr himself by crashing his car on the Whitestone Expressway at high speed. Before doing so he called 9-1-1 and identified himself and shouted an al-Qaeda slogan:

“We love death more than you love your life.”

He faces up to  life imprisonment at his Sept 7 sentencing.
