Congressional Democrats’ latest hopes of protecting Robert Mueller’s investigation hinges on a high-priority spending bill.

Democrats said they plan to tie the protection measure to the spending bill, a move that could cause spark a high-stakes clash with Republicans and President Trump.

Democrats also plan to revive the congressional investigations into Russian interference during the presidential election in 2016, the USA Today reports

On another front, Democrats continue to call for the resignation of Matthew Whitaker, a Trump loyalist whom the president appointed to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

President Trump heightened his rhetoric over the caravan of Central American migrants wending their way to the U.S., threatening to permanently shut down the southern border.

“Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries,” Trump tweeted. “Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A. We will close the Border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the WALL!”

The harsh message comes one day after Border Patrol agents used tear gas on migrants who broke through Mexico’s police lines at the Tijuana border and tried to enter the U.S.

Authorities temporarily closed the border crossing between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, one of the busiest in the nation.

President Trump came close to a sit-down interview under oath with special counsel Robert Mueller at Camp David on a Saturday in January 2018.

But as the interview approached and Mueller revealed the topics he wanted to discuss, the president’s lawyers hesitated. Trump attorney John Dowd questioned Mueller’s authority to interview the president in a letter, and just like that, the president’s administration canceled the Jan. 27 interview, according to a new report by the Associated Press

It has been nearly a year, and Trump has refused an in-person interview since.

Last week, the president turned over written answers to Mueller’s team, but the questions were limited to how much Trump’s campaign knew about Russia’s interference in the presidential election.

After Trump replaced Attorney General Jeff Sessions with loyalist Matthew Whitaker a day after the midterm elections, the fate of Mueller’s 19-month investigation hangs in the balance.

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker received more than $900,000 from a conservative nonprofit that attacks Democrats on ethical grounds.

The discovery is part of the financial disclosure forms that Whitaker is required to disclose after replacing Jeff Sessions.

Whitaker served as executive director of a nonprofit called the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, or FACT, from 2016 to 2017.

Whitaker also disclosed $15,000 in income from CNN, where made appearances and criticized the special counsel investigation that he may try to take over.

In addition, Whitaker received $103,400 from his own law firm and $1,875 in legal fees from the controversial, Florida-based World Patent Market, which is accused of bilking consumers out of millions of dollars.

President Trump has finally submitted his written answers to Robert Mueller’s questions about the president’s knowledge of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

The written response avoids – for now – a sit-down interview with special counsel prosecutors.

For nearly a year, the president’s attorneys have negotiated with prosecutors over Trump’s testimony in the 19-month investigation.

Mueller’s team provided dozens of questions to Trump’s attorneys to determine how much the president knew about Russia’s involvement in the election.
