WASHINGTON — Threats and “inappropriate communications” aimed at fed judges and fed prosecutors  have spiked in the past six years, according to a review by the Justice Department Inspector Gen. Glenn Fine.

The review found that such incidents jumped from 592 in fiscal 2003 to 1,278 in fiscal 2008,  and some aren’t “consistently and promptly reported” by judges and prosecutors.

The review also concluded that the U.S. Marshals Service “does not consistently provide an appropriate response for the risk level posed by the threat.  In addition, the (Marshals Service) does not fully or effectively coordinate with other law enforcement agencies to respond to threats against federal judicial officials.”

NEW ORLEANS — Few public officials in metro New Orleans enjoy the popularity and respect of U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

Under his watch, the U.S. attorney’s office has maintained an aggressive and important campaign against public corruption across our region and assisted local governments in fighting violent crime, earning Mr. Letten bipartisan praise.

A University of New Orleans poll last spring pegged Mr. Letten’s approval ratings at 60 percent in mostly Democratic New Orleans and 66 percent in Republican-leaning Jefferson Parish.

Not surprisingly, Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu last year recommended that President Obama reappoint Mr. Letten, a Republican and career prosecutor who was first nominated by President George W. Bush. But eight months have passed, and the Obama White House has yet to send Mr. Letten’s nomination to the U.S. Senate.

In a bloody bloody drug war south of the border, the Mexican government is showing signs that it’s not backing down.

The Associated Press is reporting that Mexican authorities have captured Carolos Beltran Leyva, the brother Beltran Leyva, a major drug boss who was gunned down in a military raid last month.

The brother’s arrest comes about two weeks after hit men murdered the family of a military man who was killed during the raid that killed Leyva. The retaliation by drug dealers sent a collective fear throughout Mexico.

WASHINGTON — It now appears that it wasn’t only the Americans who dropped the ball in the case of the suspected Nigerian plane bomber.

The Times of London reports that British security services “knew three years ago that the Detroit bomber had ‘multiple communications’ with Islamic extremists in Britain” but none of the information was shared with the U.S.

“Counterterrorism officials said Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was “reaching out” to extremists whom MI5 had under surveillance while he was studying at University College London,” the paper reported.

D.C. Gun Sting Had its Tense Moments; FBI and ATF Assisted

WASHINGTON — The three young men dressed in black walked into the Northeast auto body shop, talking fast, eager to make a deal: They had guns to sell.

Sgt. Dale Sutherland and Detective Franklyn Then sensed danger as one young man pulled out a silver handgun, unloaded the clip and laid it on the desk. Another kept his hand behind his back, and the third nervously stretched his arms above his head.

Ten officers and federal agents were on alert nearby in case of trouble. But Sutherland and Then were momentarily vulnerable. A phony storefront sting designed by D.C. police to build felony drug and weapons cases seemed on the verge of a robbery attempt. “They just kind of popped up on us,” said Then, who posed as a criminal middleman trying to ship guns to Mexico. “It didn’t feel good.”

WASHINGTON — The recent White House party crashing incident has apparently left some African Americans doubting the Secret Service’s commitment to protecting the nation’s first black president, the Washington Post is reporting.

“They allowed that couple to get in there, so obviously someone’s not doing their job,” Doug Pierce, of Cleveland, Tenn., who was touring the District told the Post. “You can’t help worrying about the president. He’s a black man, and it’s probably a lot of people out in the world trying to get to him.”

Joseine Applewhite, 40, a legal assistant from Washington remarked to the Post: “I think the Secret Service needs to step up their game a little bit. After all, the first lady was there on the night of the state dinner, and I believe the kids were also. I think a lot of black folks are angry about it. And why weren’t the Salahis arrested? Black folks are asking themselves that question. I am just upset about all of it.”

Mark Sullivan, director of the Secret Service said the agency is committing more resources to the first family than ever before, the Post reported.

“Regardless of who the president is, we know there’s always someone out there who wants to harm the president,” Sullivan said. “The fact that he’s African American has never been lost on us.”
