Ex-Prosecutor Turned Author Tries to Shield Parents From the Steamy Sex Scenes

DETROIT — Allison Leotta, a Detroit native living in the D.C. area, likes to send her parents in Michigan a draft of her new novels — minus the chapters with the steamy sex scenes.

“I take out those chapters,” says Leotta, a Michigan State University graduate.

But her mother, Diane Harnisch, of West Bloomfield, Mich., says at least with the last transcript, her daughter may have forgotten to excise those chapters. Not that it really matters. She says she reads the published books as well.

“I want to know exactly what she’s writing,” says Harnisch. “Of course as a mom, it makes me a little uncomfortable  at times. and wondering how in heavens name does she know that stuff.”

Her parents and grandmother are perhaps her  biggest fans, but certainly not the only ones.

Leotta, 40,  who is married and the mother of two young boys, is on fire in the literary world.

Described in the Providence Journal as a female John Grisham, the former D.C. sex crimes prosecutor will release her third novel “Speak of the Devil”, next Tuesday.

Speaking to Russian state TV, Snowden said he’s worried his son won’t get a fair trial in the U.S.

Lon Snowden said he’d stay in Russia if he were his son.

“Edward, I hope you are watching this,” Lon Snowden said in the interview.

“Your family is well. We love you. We hope you are healthy, we hope you are well, I hope to see you soon, but most of all I want you to be safe. I want you to find a safe haven.”

Edward Snowden remains in a Russian airport in legal limbo.

Lawyers for reputed mobster James “Whitey” Bulger continued to make the case that their client wasn’t an FBI informant, the Associated Press reports.

Bulger’s attorneys opened their case Tuesday in the murder and racketeering trial of the 83-year-old man accused of participating in 19 murders.

The Associated Press reports that Bulger’s attorneys grilled former FBI supervisor Robert Fitzpatrick, who indicated the reputed mobster denied being an informant.

Still, the FBI kept a file that showed Bulger often shared information on the mob and other criminals. Bulger’s associates also testified that he was an informant and regularly bribed FBI agents for information on investigations.

Oops! Homeland Security Loses Track of 1 Million Foreigners Who Previously Arrived in U.S.

An audit revealed Tuesday that the Homeland Security Department does not know what happened to more than 1 million people who arrived in the U.S., an embarrassing blunder as lawmakers debate a new immigration bill, The Washington Times reports.

The Government Accountability Office’s report underscores that the department’s failure to accurately track people visiting the U.S.

The Homeland Security Department was unable to prove whether more than 1 million immigrants ever left the U.S., The Washington Times reported. That’s because the department is long overdue in creating a system to track departures, a goal set in 1996.

“DHS has not yet fulfilled the 2004 statutory requirement to implement a biometric exit capability, but has planning efforts under way to report to Congress in time for the fiscal year 2016 budget cycle on the costs and benefits of such a capability at airports and seaports,” GAO investigators wrote.

When DEA agents raided a house in San Diego and found ecstasy pills in April 2012, they placed Daniel Chong in a DEA holding cell.

What happened next cost the Justice Department $4.2 million in a lawsuit settlement that is expected to be announced today, the Associated Press reports.

The 23-year-old, who was not accused of any wrongdoing, spent four days in a DEA holding cell without food or water. He drank his own urine and was covered in feces when agents found him.

Chong was an engineering student at the University of California when he was at a friend’s house who was raided, according to the AP.

Updated: U.S. Soldier Faces Up to Life in Prison for Release of 700,000 Classified Documents

U.S. soldier Bradley Manning, who is accused of the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history, could be sentenced to life in prison today, Reuters reports.

A judge is expect to render a verdict in the case against Army Private First Class Manning, 25, who’s charged with aiding the enemy by releasing 700,000 classified documents to WikiLeaks.

Judge Colonel Denise Lind ruled that Manning was appropriately trained to understand that releasing the sensitive information put the U.S. at risk.

Others say the case is overblown.

“He’s just a dumb kid who got himself into a situation where he felt he was saving the world,” said Joseph Wippl, a professor of international relations at Boston University and a former CIA officer. “I think he should be convicted and they should be easy on him. They need to do more on limiting access to classified information.”
