Lengel: Trashy Tabloid Prints False Story About the Recovery of Jimmy Hoffa’s Remains

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 12.00.58 AM

By Allan Lengel

DETROIT — In a drugstore or grocery store line, tabloids are like fool’s gold, eye-catching and enticing and capable of duping the naive. Some of the stories seem so outrageous, so far fetched. Yet, we often glance at them and read the headlines.

I was shopping in a suburb the other day and saw the Globe, a 62-year-old paper that’s part of American Media, Inc. , a New York publisher of magazines, supermarket tabloids, including the National Enquirer, and books. The front page headline reads: “Search Ends After 40 years…Jimmy Hoffa’s Body Found! It has photos of Richard Nixon, mobster Carlo Gambino and Sen. Ted Kennedy with the subhead: “One of these three ordered him killed.”

I did stories on the Hoffa disappearance years after the 1975 abduction, first for The Detroit News and then the Washington Post. So I bought it for $4.99, just out of curiosity and amusement. My mother used to love to read the tabloids, and I’d buy them on occasion for her, even though I was often embarrassed to do so, and sometimes even told the clerk: “This isn’t for me, Really, it’s for my mother.”

I’ve had first-hand experience with tabloids. Starting in 2001, I was one of the lead reporters at the Washington Post on the case involving Chandra Levy, the D.C. intern who disappeared and was having an affair with Congressman Gary Condit. Condit was a “person of interest” in the case and made for good fodder in the tabloids, though he was never charged. At the Post, we were forced to run down the flashy tabloid stories about the case and Condit. More often than not, they were totally false.

The Globe story about Hoffa is just that: False and shameless. It’s pretty disgraceful that this trashy tabloid has published this story about the Hoffa disappearance and the whereabouts of his remains. Though no one has ever been charged, the FBI and investigative journalists have a pretty good idea that certain mob figures had a hand in the death to keep Hoffa from taking over the Teamsters again after serving time in prison.

Before we go on, I asked the Detroit FBI to comment on the Globe story.

“The report is not true,” said Detroit FBI spokesperson Jill Washburn. “As it is still a pending investigation, we have no further comment.”

The tabloid shamelessly claims:

One of the most baffling mysteries of the last 40 years – the shocking disappearance of union boss Jimmy Hoffa – has been solved!

After vanishing in 1975, Hoffa has finally been found buried in a garbage dump, sealed in a barrel – and a bombshell Globe investigation reveals the Teamster kingpin was murdered on the orders of Sen. Ted Kennedy!

The monumental discovery has been hushed up by the Justice Department. But a crack team of G-men unearthed a 55-gallon drum containing Hoff’s remains in a New Jersey dump shortly before Thanksgiving, confidential law enforcement sources reveals.

Now the sources say a top-secret dossier that pointed the fed to the burial site also fingered two hitmen – and one of the killers was working for Ted, the powerful Massachusetts senator who hated Hoffa”

“The lead came from paper written by Hoffa’s killer to a one-time lover,” says a law enforcement source. “These paper specifically mention Kennedy.”

The story goes on to say that Ted Kennedy ordered the killing to get revenge because he thought Hoffa was linked to the murder of brother Robert Kennedy in 1968. You might recall, a Jordanian citizen named Sirhan Sirhan was convicted in that killing.

It seems the tabloids can’t resist exploiting the death of Hoffa, regardless of the truth.

President Obama to Announce Executive Actions to Tighten Gun Control

president obama state of unionBy Steve Neavling

President Obama is expected to announce a long-awaited executive action on gun control this week in his final year as president, Politico reports.

The White House said the measures would curb gun violence.

Citing people familiar with the proposals, Obama would require more small-scale gun sellers to be licensed, making them subject to background checks.

Obama also wants to tighten rules for reporting stolen or lost guns.

Obama proposed even stiffer gun regulations but Congress was unlikely to approve any new curbs on firearms.

Federal officials believe ISIS has a new “Jihadi John.”

The suspect’s name is Siddartha Dhar, a London man who converted to Islam as a young man and later joined the banned radical Islamic group, Al Muhajiroun, CBS News reports.

Authorities had him in custody in 2014 for suspected terrorism but were forced to release him because of a lack of evidence.

Soon after, he joined ISIS in Syria and quipped about the security in Britain.

“What a shoddy security system Britain must have to allow me to breeze through Europe to the Islamic State,” he tweeted.

In the latest ISIS video showing the execution of five men, a masked man is shown, and it’s believed he is Dhar.

British intelligence services are trying to conclusively identify the masked man by comparing his voice and face with samples the government already has of Dhar.

FBI Takes Control of Federal Building Takeover in Oregon, Urges for Peaceful Resolution

By Steve Neavling

The FBI has taken over the investigation into the armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon and has pledged to work with state and local authorities for “a peaceful solution to the situation,” The Washington Post reports.

How the FBI will reach that resolution is unclear because federal authorities have declined to elaborate.

The occupiers also said Monday that they are confident that law enforcement won’t try to forcibly remove them from the refuge.

The protesters were rallying against the arson conviction of two local ranchers, Dwight Hammond and his son, Steven, who reported to federal prison Monday.

“Due to safety considerations for both those inside the refuge as well as the law enforcement officers involved, we will not be releasing any specifics with regards to the law enforcement response,” the FBI said in a statement.

Former Secret Service Agent Blasted Bernie Sanders as ‘Socialist’ Bent on Destroying Freedoms

Former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino slammed Democratic president candidate Bernie Sanders as a socialist bent on destroying American’s economic freedoms, The Washington Times reports.

Bongino, an author who often resorts to hyperbolic, partisan language, condemned Sanders on Facebook.

“There is no such thing as ‘democratic socialism,’” Mr. Bongino argued. “Democratic socialism is the foolish idea that you can vote away the liberty of others, as long as you do it slowly.

“There is nothing ‘democratic’ about voting to take away the economic liberty of free men and women’s by taxing away more of their income,” he continued. “There is nothing ‘democratic’ about voting to take away an individual’s liberty to choose their health care options by turning it over to government bureaucrats.

“And there is nothing ‘democratic’ about voting away a family’s freedom to choose where they can send their child to school,” he added.

Bongino concluded: “Don’t be a sucker, don’t #‎FeelTheBern.”

A drunken TSA screener was forced off the road by Port Authority cops early Sunday when she was spotted driving in a restricted area, The New York Post reports.

Authorities said Kimberly Flemming, 33, was off duty and driving at twice the legal limit for alcohol when she refused to comply with orders to pull over near Newark Airport.

Police forced her to stop by pulling in front of her 2103 Nissan Altima.

Police found her wearing one boot with the other off.

She allegedly was drinking at a nearby bistro but insisted she wasn’t drunk.

“I’m not drunk,” she told the police.

She was charge with driving while intoxicated.
