Republican Senator Sessions Slams ICE Director Morton, Calling for His Resignation

Steve Neavling

Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions on Tuesday blasted the performance of ICE Director John Morton and called for his resignation, saying he has failed to enforce immigration law, the Daily Caller reports.

“Mr. Morton can no longer effectively serve at this post, and perhaps more importantly there can be no comprehensive immigration reform as long as he’s the person in charge with enforcing it,” Sessions said, explaining failures to enforce current immigration law.

Sessions and others have criticized the Obama administration of diluting immigration enforcement.

“It’s well documented that the Obama administration has either unilaterally weakened or outright waived the enforcement at the border, at the — in the interior and at the work site and at the welfare office of existing immigration laws,” Sessions explained. “That’s just a fact.”

Former Iraqis Accused of Terrorism Are Sentenced to Federal Prison

Steve Neavling

Two former Iraqi residents who were living in Kentucky were sentenced to prison this week for their involvement with terrorist activities, the FBI announced Tuesday.

Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, 25, was given a life sentence, while his conspirator, Waad Ramadan Alwan, was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison.

Both had already pleaded guilty.

“These are experienced terrorists who willingly and enthusiastically participated in what they believed were insurgent support operations designed to harm American soldiers in Iraq,” U.S. Attorney David Hale said. “The serious crimes of both men merit lengthy punishment, and only the value of Alwan’s immediate and extensive cooperation with law enforcement justifies our recommendation of a reduced sentence for him. Bringing these men to justice is the result of a comprehensive law enforcement effort.”

The defendants tried to ship weapons and money to Iraqi insurgents, the FBI said.

The FBI declined to divulge details of the probe.

Michigan Supreme Court Judge Diane Hathaway Pleads Guilty to Bank Fraud

By Allan Lengel
Deadline Detroit

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Diane Hathaway must have wanted to pinch herself, wake up from the nightmare and return to her prestigious perch in life, sitting on the state Supreme Court.

She couldn’t have imagined it would have ended like this.

But here she was, the daughter of a Detroit cop, educated in the city, standing in disgrace Tuesday morning in federal court in Ann Arbor, like a common defendant, pleading guilty to bank fraud as a gallery full of media members looked on including Ross Jones of WXYZ, who broke the story about her financial scheme. Her husband Michael J. Kingsley, an attorney, was also on hand as was U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade.

U.S. District Judge John Corbett O’Meara set sentencing for May 28 at 2 p.m. She faces up to 18 months, but could conceivably get probation.

Hathaway pleaded guilty to a real estate scheme in which she transferred properties out of her name to make it look as if she had less assets, all so she could get a short sale on her Grosse Pointe Park home and get out of $600,000 she owed the bank. The original mortgage was $1.4 million.

Homeland Security Report: Customs and Border Protection Agencies Rife with Dysfunction

Steve Neavling

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is mired in internal dysfunction and turf battles and is unable to stem corruption within its ranks, according to an internal study, the reports.

The website says the agency, which has about 60,000 employees, has been unable to control its disciplinary system or a culture of acceptable corruption.

The study, which showed myriad problems, was completed by the Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute, a type of think tank for the Department of Homeland Security.

The Center for Investigative reporting reviewed the 80-page unclassified report, which chronicles problems from as far back as 2002, the reported.
