Defense Attorney: Terrorism Suspect Was Coerced into Detonating Fake Bomb

court Steve Neavling

Mohamed Mohamud was a naive teenager manipulated by the FBI to detonate what he thought was a real bomb at a Christmas tree-lighting event in Oregon, his defense attorney argued in the terrorism case Wednesday, the AP reported.

The FBI agent who posed as an al-Qaida terrorist admitted during cross-examination that Mohamud had trouble with the simplest of tasks – renting a storage shed and buying bomb-making ingredients, the AP wrote.

Mohamud, now 21, flipped the switch on what turned out to be a phony bomb during the tree-lighting ceremony in 2000.

Mohamud “didn’t have much money until you came into his life,” the defense attorney, Lisa Hay, told the agent, the AP reported.

Hay said Mohamud received financial assistance from the FBI.

Border Patrol Rescues Volunteers Who Tried to Help Illegal Immigrants

Volunteers for a humanitarian group that provides clothing to illegal immigrants crossing the border in the winter were rescued by Border Patrol agents, KPBS reports

The rescue last week came as volunteers were climbing mountains in Arizona to provide warm clothes to the illegal immigrants when the trouble began, KPBS wrote.

Their car wouldn’t start because the battery was dead.

“And we had no cell service on the phones,” Kathryn Ferguson, volunteer for Tucson Samaritans, told KPBS. “We spent about an hour walking up and down these hills trying to get cell service.”

After using their GPS to notify someone of the situation, two Border Patrol agents rescued the volunteers as the sun was setting and temperatures were dropping into the 20s.

Ex-Fed Prosecutor Keeps Trying and Trying to Find Out Detroit Free Press Sources

Ex-Prosecutor Richard Convertino

Deadline Detroit

DETROIT — Former federal prosecutor Richard Convertino isn’t giving up in his quest to find out confidential sources in a story Detroit Free Press reporter David Ashenfelter wrote nine years ago.

U.S. District Court Robert Cleland in Detroit on Tuesday ordered the paper to produce documents by Jan. 29 related to the story or confidential sources, according to the Free Press.

He also ordered that the Free Press produce a witness other than Ashenfelter who would know about the sources. The judge had previously granted Ashenfelter his Fifth Amendment right not to disclose the sources. Ashenfelter recently took a buyout from the Free Press.

“We respect the court, and we also respect the public’s right to know and the protection of sources,” Free Press Editor and Publisher Paul Anger said in a story in the Free Press. “Our legal fight continues.”

FBI Not Informed That Suspect in Libya Attacks Was Released from Tunisian Court

Steve Neavling

A Tunisian court released a leading suspect in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, without telling the FBI, Fox News reports.

Before the release of Ali Ani al-Harzi, the FBI interviewed the terrorism suspect last month for about two hours, Fox News wrote.

The interrogation was not sufficient to determine whether al-Harzi was involved in the attack, officials told Fox News.

An extremist group with ties to Al Qaeda posted a video purportedly of al-Harzi walking away from court Jan. 7.

“A lot of these groups are emboldened after Benghazi and after a series of basically missteps by the American government trying to investigate what happened in Benghazi,”  Tom Joscelyn, with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said. ”

He continued: “We’re still compiling the evidence on how these groups are interlinked,” Joscelyn said. “But here you have with al-Harzi, you have an individual who was involved in the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. We know that members of Ansar al Sharia in Benghazi were involved in that same attack and now we know that Ansar al-Sharia Tunisia has been celebrating and really urging for the release of al-Harzi in Tunis. Therefore you’re seeing this common interest in what happened in Benghazi and the individuals responsible.”
