Closing Arguments to Begin Today in Texas Voter ID Law Trial

By Steve Neavling

Judges who will determine the fate of Texas’ controversial voter ID law are to hear closing arguments in the case today after both sides wrapped up testimony Thursday.

During the hearing, some experts testified that the law, which would require voters to show a valid ID, would disproportionately affect minorities. Lawyers for Texas countered that there is no evidence to make such a claim.

The Justice Department claims the new law violates the Voting Rights Act, which was designed to protect minority voting rights.

The judges expect to make a decision before November’s election.

Legal Experts Say Louie Freeh’s Penn State Report is Lacking

Channel 13 News

By Steve Neavling

Some legal experts criticize former FBI director Louis Freeh for not delving deeper into the past of accused molester Jerry Sandusky while investigating the Penn State University sex-abuse scandal, The New York Daily News reports.

Freeh’s report, which was released Thursday, didn’t explore Sandusky’s relationship with children prior to 1998, when the mother of one of Sandusky’s victims told police that the then-defensive coordinator fondled her boy in the shower.

But some legal experts say Freeh should have investigated Sandusky’s time at The Second Mile, his charity for disadvantaged kids that dates back to 1977.

“We know Sandusky used Second Mile to draw together children from precarious situations, and those are the kids who predators target,” Marci Hamilton, professor at New York’s Cardozo School of Law, told the Daily News. “Given the science of sexual abuse, we know Sandusky didn’t start in 1998, when he was in his mid-50s.”

FBI: No Evidence That George Zimmerman Is a Racist

By Steve Neavling

The FBI found no evidence that accused murderer George Zimmerman was racist when he shot an unarmed black teen in Florida, according to new documents released Thursday, Reuters reports.

FBI agents investigating whether race was a factor in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin interviewed police and Zimmerman’s boss, friends, neighbors and others.

In an interview with the FBI, Sanford Police Detective Christopher Serino said he did not believe the shooting was motivated by racial prejudice.

It was Travyon’s attire – a hoodie – that appears to have prompted Zimmerman to confront an unarmed Martin.

Zimmerman “took it upon himself to view Martin as acting suspicious,” Serino said, adding that members of local gangs often wear hooded sweatshirts.

Louie Freeh Report: Penn State’s Top Leaders Covered Up for Sandusky for 14 Years

By Allan Lengel and Steve Neavling

In a damning report that confirms what many suspected, an independent investigation, led by ex-FBI Director Louis Freeh found that top leaders at Pennsylvania State University, including legendary football coach Joe Paterno, tried covering up Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse of children for 14 years.

The findings of the panel’s 162-page report was released Thursday.

“The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized,” Freeh commented on Thursday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Freeh concluded that PSU leaders “never demonstrated, through actions or words, any concern for the safety and well-being of Sandusky’s victims until after Sandusky’s arrest.”

In fact, Paterno and top PSU officials offered Sandusky a job indefinitely in 1999, a year after they were informed of him groping an 11-year-old boy in the shower, according to

Freeh also faults Penn State’s sports culture, saying witnesses and victims feared the power of the football program and its coaches, the LA Times reported.
