To the DEA: Welcome to Bulgaria.

The agency has opened an office in the city of Sofia, according to the FOCUS News agency.

UThe opening of an office of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Bulgaria is a sign for strategic partnership and cooperation between the US and Bulgaria,” Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said at the official opening of the office in Sofia, according to the news agency.

“It is highly important that the opening of a DEA office in Bulgaria will strengthen the country’s role in the neutralisation of drug trafficking rings and now we become a much securer and more reliable external border of the EU, since Bulgaria has a geostrategic location in the Balkans,” Tsvetan Tsvetanov said.

A group of New Orleans cops convicted in connection with the shootings at the infamous Danziger Bridge got whacked at sentencing on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in New Orleans.

Four of the officers got sentences ranging from 38 to 65 years in prison. A fifth officer, who was just involved in the cover up, got six years, the Justice Department announced.

The sentencing capped an ugly chapter in New Orleans history.

Days after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the cops were involved in the shootings of six civilians. Two of the civilians died.

“We hope that today’s sentences give a measure of peace and closure to the victims of this terrible shooting, who have suffered unspeakable pain and who have waited so patiently for justice to be done. The officers who shot innocent people on the bridge and then went to great lengths to cover up their own crimes have finally been held accountable for their actions,” Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Thomas E. Perez said in a statement. “As a result of today’s sentencing, the city of New Orleans can take another step forward.”

U.S. District Court Judge Kurt Englehardt the long sentences as follows:

  • Sgt. Kenneth Bowen, 40 years.
  • Sgt. Robert Gisevius, 40 years.
  • Officer Robert Faulcon, 65 years.
  • Officer Anthony Villavaso,38 years.
  • Sgt. Arthur “Archie” Kaufman, 6 years.

Ex-U.S. Secret Service agent Daniel Bongino was triumphant Tuesday, winning the Republican Maryland primary for  U.S. Senate, the Associated Press reported.

He will now square off in November against incumbent Democrat Benjamin Cardin in what’s expected to be an uphill battle.

Bongino has been campaigning on the need to reduce tax rates and simplify the tax code, AP reported.

Bongino, who worked as a New York cop for four years before joining the Secret Service in 1999, resigned last year from the Baltimore field office.

Bongino told ticklethewire.com in an interview last June that he would focus on the education and the economy in his campaign.

“You can’t have a solid economy without a solid educational system,” he said.

He said his years as a Secret Service agent, which included presidential protective details and wide-scale fraud investigations, has helped groom him for his latest venture.

He said the Secret Service has given him great leadership skills.

“Having someone’s life in your hands with that kind of profile, there is really no greater responsibility in law enforcement,” he said.

A controversy is brewing over the Russian spy ring the feds busted up in 2010.

USA Today reports that the FBI is denying a report that the feds shut down the probe into the spy ring because one of the spies, the glamorous Anna Chapman, was “edging closer to President Obama’s inner circle.”

The FBI denied that allegation in a report that a top counter intelligence official during a BBC interview made that suggestion.

USA TODAY reported that the FBI issued a statement on the matter: “Mr. Figliuzzi’s comments to BBC were consistent with and confined to the information outlined in the criminal complaint that was filed nearly two years ago. There is no allegation or suggestion in the complaint that Anna Chapman or anyone else associated with this investigation attempted to seduce a U.S. Cabinet official.”
