FBI Informant Slept With Muslim Women Agency Was Targeting

By Paul Harris
The Guardian

IRVINE, Calif. — Craig Monteilh says he did not balk when his FBI handlers gave him the OK to have sex with the Muslim women his undercover operation was targeting. Nor, at the time, did he shy away from recording their pillow talk.

“They said, if it would enhance the intelligence, go ahead and have sex. So I did,” Monteilh told the Guardian as he described his year as a confidential FBI informant sent on a secret mission to infiltrate southern Californian mosques.

It is an astonishing admission that goes that goes to the heart of the intelligence surveillance of Muslim communities in America in the years after 9/11. While police and FBI leaders have insisted they are acting to defend America from a terrorist attack, civil liberties groups have insisted they have repeatedly gone too far and treated an entire religious group as suspicious.

Publication Reveals GOP Candidates’ Secret Service Names

By Allan Lengel

Now comes the lighter side of the bumpy Republican presidential campaign.

The New York Daily News reports that GQ magazine has revealed the Secret Service code names for candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

The paper reported that Romney chose the name “Javelin”. The paper reported that some speculated the name came from a 1960s muscle car made by American Motors, which Romney’s father George headed up.

The paper reported that Santorum picked “Petrus,” which means “rock” in Latin.

It’s too bad the Secret Service doesn’t let candidates pick their opponents’ names. Now that  would be interesting.

Owners of NY Mets Agree to Pay $162 Million in Madoff Case

By CNN Money

NEW YORK — The owners of the New York Mets have agreed to pay a total of $162 million to the court-appointed trustee in the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme, according to the federal court handling the case.

Trustee Irving Picard, who is in charge of recovering assets stolen in Madoff’s pyramid-style scheme, had sued the owners — including Saul Katz, Fred Wilpon and the holding company Sterling Equities — for $303 million.

That was in addition to the up to $83 million that Judge Jed Rakoff had earlier ruled that the Mets’ owners were liable in the case.

The settlement was announced Monday just as jury selection was scheduled to begin at U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York in a trial on the trustee’s claim. The settlement negates the need for a court case.

Baltimore Cop Gets 30 Months in Towing Scheme that Scandalized Dept.

By Allan Lengel

A Baltimore cop is off to prison for two years and six months for extortion in a towing scheme that scandalized the department.

U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake of Baltimore on Monday sentenced Baltimore office Jerry Diggs, Jr., 25, who was involved in a scheme in which brothers Hernan Moreno and Edwin Mejia paid Diggs and more than 50 other officers to arrange for their car repair company, Majestic, to tow vehicles from accident scenes and make repairs. The cops bypassed the city-authorized towing company.

The judge also ordered Diggs to pay $13,105.09 in restitution.

“Officer Diggs chose a treacherous path that included taking bribes, filing false police reports and committing insurance fraud,” said U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein in a statement. “Even as we condemn such criminal conduct, we should pause to thank the many police officers who serve with honor and integrity.

Queens Man Indicted for Bombing of Islamic Mosque and Hindu Temple

By Allan Lengel

A Queens man was charged with hate crimes and explosive crimes stemming from allegations that allegedly fire bombed a mosque and a Hindu temple housed in a private residence on Jan. 1, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Ray Lazier Lengend, aka “Suraj Poonai,” was charged with the fire bombing of the Imam Al- Khoei Foundation mosque in Jamaica, Queens, and a Hindu temple housed in a private residence in Hillside, Queens, authorities said.

Authorities alleged that on Jan. 1 Lengend entered a local convenience store located near the intersection of 179th Street and Hillside Avenue in Queens and threw a flaming bottle filled with gasoline.

Authorities said the bottle hit the ground, and liquid spilled out and began to burn. A store employee extinguished the flames, and no one was hurt.

After leaving the convenience store, Lengend headed over to a private residence on 107th Avenue in Queens, where he threw another fire-bomb. This time, the house caught fire, causing substantial damage.

Later, authorities said Lengend  went to the Imam Al-Khoei Foundation mosque, where he threw glass bottles containing gasoline at the building with the goal of inflicting damage on the mosque and harming Muslims and Arabs.

Lengend’s final fire-bombing in Queens targeted the Hindu temple inside a home. New York police detectives arrested Lengend two days after the attack.

“Hate crimes offend the very principles upon which this country was founded, and those who engage in such conduct will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This defendant allegedly sought to fan the flames of ethnic and religious tension. Those flames will always be extinguished by the rule of law,” stated U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to the Queens District Attorney’s Office and the New York City Police Department for their investigation and coordination in this matter.”
